For the client’s 450 TPD (tons per day) carbon dioxide purification and liquefaction plant, Middough provided civil, electrical and mechanical engineering and design services. Raw gas from an adjacent refinery is routed into the plant for purification into carbon dioxide which is used in the Northeast U.S. beverage industry. The project consisted of adding five CO2 storage tanks, process building, QA building, electrical building, transformers, truck fill area, railcar unloading station and associated roadways and fencing to a new site. Middough’s space-efficient and economical modular design for the storage tank piping and cable tray skids was well-received by the client. The client will replicate this design in future projects at similar sites.
 
In addition to providing construction drawings for foundations, structural steel, piping, electrical and instrumentation, Middough interfaced with the client on a daily basis, collaborating with their entire project team. Middough participated in the client’s internal Operations Design Review and incorporated resulting modifications into the facility design and provided the field construction
specification and safety checklists. During the construction process, Middough responded to field
inquiries and suggestions from the project general contractor.

Middough has worked with this client since 2012 on 100+ industrial gas projects.  For the client’s 300 TPD nitrogen plant which serves the San Juan basin in Colorado and northwestern New Mexico, we provided civil, electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation and controls engineering and design services.  Nitrogen produced at this plant is used in place of water to promote natural gas release through the hydraulic fracturing process. The project consisted of adding a large storage tank, truck fill area, with associated above ground piping and electrical components to the existing nitrogen processing site.
 
Middough provided construction drawings for foundations, structural steel, site grading, piping, electrical and instrumentation. We also provided key input for the schematic wiring diagrams. To evaluate piping design and determine support locations, Middough performed pipe flexibility and stress analysis using Caesar software. After construction drawings were released we created additional piping drawings for client-requested field modifications.

Middough participated in the plant design aspects of the client’s FEL process and modularization studies for a 170 MMSCFD (million standard cubic feet per day) hydrogen purification and compression project on the Gulf Coast in Texas. The project consisted of three multi gas, eight cylinder reciprocating compressors and a two-stage reciprocating hydrogen compressor. FEL activities included site layout development, civil / mechanical / electrical construction key quantity development and engineering estimates. The project modularization study involved development of detailed plant and piping 3D models for the site. Site layout was developed utilizing 20+ steel framed piping modules that could be shop fabricated for economical construction and to minimize field time. Middough produced photographic quality renderings of the project model to assist in project evaluation, visualization and approval.
 
Detailed design scope for the project included:  P&ID drafting; analytical P&ID drafting; electrical single line drafting; drafting of electrical and analytical schematic wiring diagrams; development of the I/O list; definition drawings for telecommunications, LEL / Fire Detection, security systems; temporary power system design; control room layouts; switchgear enclosure layouts; site definition / grading / drainage design; and development of a flare system purge package. Middough also provided technical field support to the project during construction.
