This new 95-acre greenfield Industrial Fermentation campus utilizes a large scale microbial process to produce “green” biorational chemicals that are recovered and purified for use as pesticides and plant growth regulators.
The design of this facility includes a 120,000 SF production space, a 30,000 SF laboratory / administration building, and a 30,000 SF central utilities building.
Throughout this 29-month project, Middough provided planning, engineering, scheduling, procurement and estimating services. State-of-the-art software tools including Bentley Smart P&ID, Bentley 3-D AutoPlant and REVIT were utilized during the development of the design.
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Batavia, IL
Middough has been working at Fermilab for many years providing architecture and engineering design services for some of Fermi’s most complex research facilities.
MC-1: Middough provided construction documents for Fermi’s new MC-1 building, the first research building on Fermi's new Muon Campus.
“Muon g-2 (MC-1) is an Intensity Frontier experiment that will allow researchers to peer into the subatomic world to search for undiscovered particles that may be hiding in the vacuum.”
Mu2e: Middough designed the second Muon Campus structure, Mu2e, which includes a complex below grade concrete structure designed to accommodate experiment equipment that direct and control the particle beam used to generate high energy particle collisions.

Argonne National Laboratory
Middough maintains an Architecture and Engineering (AE) IDIQ contract for the Infrastructure Program at the Argonne site in Lemont, IL.
Work under this Program includes office and laboratory build-out and refurbishment, interior and exterior building repairs, landscaping and civil design, and site infrastructure / utility support. As a resource for the nation, Argonne operates facilities which allow scientific users from universities, national laboratories, and private institutions to carry out experiments and pursue groundbreaking discoveries that would otherwise not be possible.
Laboratory & Office Facility, Midwest
Middough was selected by a chemical client to provide design and engineering services for a new 36,000 SF laboratory and administration facility to replace an existing, outdated building. The project consisted of 16,000 SF of laboratory space and 20,000 SFof office / administrative space. The facility includes a variety of QC and research oriented spaces, as well as conference rooms, boardroom, offices, open cubicle areas and cafeteria, which will double as a space for company gatherings
At the onset of the assignment Middough provided complete programming of the laboratory spaces, met with laboratory users to determine work flow, equipment needs and use, chemical use and storage, as well as adjacencies between laboratories and air lock requirements. This included a laboratory equipment relocation plan for all equipment being moved from the existing to the new laboratory.
Integrated Operations Facility, Illinois
A chemical company selected Middough to develop a master plan and conceptual design for a new Integrated Operations Facility for the purpose of promoting interaction among employees and allowing efficient access to the plant and parking. The new facility is sited adjacent to operations, but at a safe distance from production areas, and to allow for future growth.
The new facility consolidates spaces which include control rooms, offices, change house, laboratory, maintenance/store room, vehicle storage building, and guard house, which are currently scattered about the plant site.
Middough provided an estimate of total construction cost, generated interior images and animated fly around showing building features as they would be experienced by employees and visitors.
