Stark State College of Technology, Fuel Cell Prototyping Center, North Canton, OH

Wanting to be a leader in fuel cell education has paid off for Stark State when they selected Middough to design their new 25,000 SF research and development center at a cost of $4.7 million. Middough coupled its architecture expertise and process engineering to create a cost effective one-of-a-kind facility with laboratories, clean rooms, demonstration and prototype assembly areas. Stark State has leveraged their new facility to develop more than $18 million in grants from partnerships with business and industry, and state and local government to expand fuel cell curricula, support industry research and development, and prepare technicians for the emerging field.

Penn State University

Penn State University, Nanofabrication Facility, University Park, PA

The emerging sciences of nanotechnology initiated the demand for a new, 50,000 SF state-of-the-art Materials Research Institute, to serve an international research community. Middough began with a focus on creating a new image for the Center for Nanotech Education and Utilization (CNEU) through entrance and public space remodeling and updating research technology with a new class 10,000 cleanroom which included an attendant support area. MRI has become a model for its interdisciplinary approach to research, both within and outside the university.

The Ohio State University

The Ohio State University, Central Utility Plant Upgrades, Columbus OH

The Ohio State University´s water treatment plant was undersized for current and projected demand requiring a new facility to house the physical size of a larger system. Middough designed a replacement for the existing boiler water treatment system with a 1,000,000 lb/hr hard water reverse osmosis treatment process. The new water treatment system is located in the existing coal storage building connected to McCracken Power Plant by an underground tunnel. This configuration will enable operation at "N+1" capacity with the ability to off-line a single unit for maintenance.

University of Chicago

University of Chicago, Various Utility Projects, Chicago, IL

In support of the University´s expansion south of the Midway and west of Drexel Avenue, Middough evaluated existing distribution infrastructure condition and capacity against future demand loads for steam, chilled water electricity and storm water systems. Development of the utilities master plan led to multiple system expansions and connecting buildings to the main system.

University of Wisconsin

University of Wisconsin, Charter Street Heating Plant, Madison, WI

The University´s need to couple green energy solutions with increasing campus utility requirements led to rebuilding the Charter Street Power Plant. Utilizing renewable biomass as the primary energy source for the plant has fundamentally changed the fuel cell handling system, which led to new boiler technologies with capacities as high as 350,000 lb/hr with total new capacity of 750,000 lb/hr, and electricity generation in excess of 25 MW. The Integrating the new systems into the University campus, residential and business community with minimal impact has been the greatest challenge.
