2021 International Women in Engineering Day

June 23, 2021

International Women in Engineering Day is all about celebrating the amazing work women are doing around the world and raising the profile of women in the field.

Middough is proud to recognize and celebrate some of our most talented women engineers in our company and learn about their passion for engineering, as well as what advice they would give to any other women who are interested in pursuing a career in engineering.

What advice would you give to women who are interested in pursuing a career in engineering?

Stick with it - sometimes it seems like you will never finish college, but it is worth it in the end. Also, remember to be true to yourself, it is not always easy working in a male dominated field, but you are strong and intelligent and can hold your own!

What inspired you to begin a career in engineering?

I read somewhere (when I was in high school) that the purpose of engineering was to improve the quality of life of humankind. Plus, I really  enjoyed Math and Science. So, I figured that engineering would be the best direction for me to go.

What do you like best about working in engineering?

I enjoy project teamwork with different disciplines. Although I now work primarily as a Project Manager, I often enjoyed my days as an electrical engineer interacting with Process, Chemical, and even Mechanical Engineers. And I especially enjoy when I get to go into the field and see how the design translates into real-world construction and operations. It is very satisfying to watch your design come to life and seamlessly contribute to society's well-being.

What advice would you give to women who are interested in pursuing a career in engineering?

Be your authentic self. Don't be afraid to be a change agent. And never stop learning.

What inspired you to begin a career in engineering?

I enjoy the challenges of solving problems and have always gravitated towards math and science. I like that there is an answer or hypothesis that can be proven or disproven. In school I felt the English and literature classes were more open to interpretation and were subjective.

What do you like best about working in engineering?

I like working with people with all different backgrounds to try to piece together and develop the 'best' solution. Every day is different and new challenges arise, which I find thrilling.

What advice would you give to women who are interested in pursuing a career in engineering?

Do It! There are so many opportunities and career paths open to engineers.
